New Kicks Debuts at the Perfect Event

So I'm walking around the mall with a mission to purchase some flats for work..  I'm looking and looking and nothing is calling my name.. Of course when I did find something, they don't my size..  The little lady says "oh if you still want them, you can purchase them here and we can ship them to your home for free".  I'm like "yes that's cool and all but I have to try them on,  thanks anyways".

I head over to Macy's since my car is parked that way.  I pass by the shoe department and they have a whole shoe sale..  Well isn't that nice of the universe to put that in place for me, lol. I look around and there it was, a graffiti print flat from Steve Madden!! I try them on and all I could hear was the sounds of Planet Rock and the instant memory of the first time I seen the art of B-boying.  At that second I wish I could breakdance!  I'm like these are dope!!  I purchased them with my discount and smiled internally as I walked to my car.

In a few days, October 9th, an opening reception of Living Like Kings was about to happen at the World Chess Hall of Fame (WCHOF) in STL.  The event was beautifully executed showing those in attendance the surprising ways in which the ancient game of chess intersects with powerful, creative expression in hip hop culture.  One level showcased a two wall feature film created by Benjamin Kaplan.  It was amazing to watch especially when two familiar faces, Thelonius Kryptonite and DJ Needles, appeared on the screen. I'm like oh shit I know them.  I look at a wall of credits and just like that I feel so proud and honored to see names of those I know.  I felt like a proud mom lol.

On the second floor, images by Adrian Walker and others that I have not met were up for display.  DJ Needles was spinning and love filled the air..  It was an amazing night especially when the younger generation danced along with the more experienced cypher members.  Words were displayed on various screens and canvasses of memorable moments in Hip Hop, lyrics to songs, and the history of chess.

But the best part for me happened as I walked in WCHOF.  I walked in seen my peeps in the doorway along with Rza like right there in the flesh.. Oh my wowzers!  I really could not remember the last time I was star stuck but it was happening.. I was speechless as a tingling sensation came over me.  After snapping out of it, I quickly got my picture with my FAV from Wutang.  I was in AWH!!  Since like forever, I have been a fan of Wutang but especially Rza and Method Man.  I love the way Rza's voice and knowledge of like ALL made me feel.  So to see him in person was Everything.  The whole event left me with such a feeling marvelous.  I was not quite ready to leave since the opening reception only lasted for two hours.  Clearly others felt the same because the large crowd of partakers continued their building and bonding right beside the large chess piece displayed onside of WCHOF.  This fabulous exhibit will be at the WCHOF until April 26, 2015 so make sure you check it out.

My shoes were a hit and I'm glad to have debuted them at the perfect STL event :)

September 27, 2014 #OOTD

Okay so I am back after a few long months of busy busy... Hopefully that won't happen again, well at least not that long of a break.. During this time, a few ladies asked me if I can start sharing where I find the stuff that I be wearing... I was like "OMG, really?"  But hey I don't mind, just don't let me catch you wearing the same exact outfit and all on the day that I am... Haha!!

So here's my first #OOTD from this past Saturday :)

When I think about wear these items came from, it's amazing that all my clothing items came from Forever 21.. Here's the details,

Crop top from Forever 21: Its hard to see but it's like a metallic dark gray crop top with a black faux leather trim and a zipper in the back.

Zippered leggings from Forever 21: I love these maroon colored leggings.  They are thick and has two silver zippers by my hips that you can't see and a wide elastic black band on the top.

Vest zippered thing from Forever 21: I'm all about the zippers clearly because this also has a zipper and you can see it :).  It's all black with a bit of gray.

Shoes from Nine West: I love that they are a good short height for long days on your feet and shiny black oh and they show my tats lol :).

Statement piece necklace from Hyper Haute: okay like seriously, if you have never heard of Hyper Haute or Erica Dunk , you got to know her and well you just heard it lol. She's an amazing local designer from STL.. She knows how to blend hardware with a feminine touch!!!! Find her on Facebook and Instagram :).

Hair and makeup by me :)

Okay well here's to the first one :).. Till next time..

3rd Modeling Tip: More Research, Networking and Business Cards/Ports

More Research
I cannot explain to you how much research is KEY!!! It’s really the key to many things.  I mean would you just go out and buy a new Ferrari without doing your research?  I think not.

One way to research is to set up Google alerts with keywords such as “casting call” “fashion industry” “plus size model”, etc.  I am not sure what you can do with other email accounts, but if you have a Gmail account, you can set up these alerts, which will generate an email about the topics based on your word choices.  You can manage how often you would like to receive these emails based on your preferences.  This is another good way to stay in the loop on things going on in the fashion industry or whatever topic you choose.

Get out there and Network More
In my previous modeling tip post (2nd Modeling Tip: Research and Network), I mentioned how networking is a great way to get yourself out there!  You really should take advantage of any networking opportunity that may rise.  You never know where a simple “Hello my name is…” will take you. So besides working the room at any networking or fashion events, continue your research and networking on foot as well as the web!  Look at websites such as Plus Model Magazine, Bloggers, etc., and subscribe to get there newsletters.  Look for model searches or fashion shows in your area to start.  Be sure to pay attention to what is being asked of you and make sure that you do not agree to anything that is not “you”.  You have to remember that you are a Brand and you should not do anything that will harm your reputation.  During your search, if it sounds like something that fits who you are, submit your name with photos.

Look into the local boutiques and stop by and pay them a visit.  In addition, do your homework on the local designers and reach out to them.  Most of the times, business owners and designers are looking for models to work with to shoot their products.  Clothing, Jewelry, shoes, and so on, always look better on a model than a plain ole mannequin.  This may not always work but if you leave a great impression and if you are a type of look that fits their vision or brand, it may happen later on down the line.

For example, I researched the local St. Louis area plus size boutiques.  I found only a few but one was more interesting than the rest because they carried some of my favorite plus size designers.  I stopped by one day to check it out and looked for the dress that I have wanted to try on in person (shopping for clothes on the web sucks, lol).  As I entered the boutique, the energy was just amazing.  I loved the music that she was playing and the space was beautifully designed.  A lady came from behind her desk and welcomed me to the boutique and asked if I was looking for anything in particular.  I told her what I was looking for and towards the middle of my boutique experience, I asked her if she was looking for any plus size models.  I totally loved her energy and thought that it would be a great fit for the start of my modeling career.  6 fashion shows and several photo shoots later; I am one of the faces of Honey’s Child Boutique.

Business Cards/Portfolio Book
After you get a few photo shoots under your belt, hopefully with some of the tips I mentioned during the 1st modeling tip blog post (My First Tip for Aspiring Models), you should create some business cards.  This will be great for passing around during the networking events that you attend.  I love working with moo.com but there are many other websites such as vista print.  You can take advantage of Moo’s 1st 50 free business cards and all you do if pay for shipping and any extra things you may want on the card.  Just click on this link: http://us.moo.com/uploader/?type=businesscard&promotional=1&ppid=659

Now you need a portfolio that you should carry around with you to auditions and casting calls.  Not all places require you to have one but it is always GREAT when you do!  I would start with printing your best photos that show your true character and versatility and purchase a portfolio from a company such as Portfolio Mart.  They have many different styles depending on what you are looking for.  If you decide to purchase one on this website, be sure to SAVE 10% by using the COUPON CODE: MM19400

Gazelle STL Launch Party

On one lovely Thursday evening, 100 personally selected fashionites gathered to celebrate the launch of Gazelle STL Magazine.  The venue was perfect and so as the weather.  It was slight chilly night, which was well needed for a cooling session after all of the dancing that was going on.  Designers, Models, Business Owners, Fashion Editors, Makeup Artists, Hair Stylists, Musicians, Photographers and many others came to congratulate the amazing team in charge of this new magazine to hit the St. Louis area.  Gazelle STL is a quarterly magazine that comes in digital and print formats.  Approximately 10,000 copies of the first issue were distributed around the St. Louis metropolitan area.

** Photo of Thelonius Kryptonite, Tameka Green, Dee Jay Nune, and I**

Attendees of this classy and fabulous event nibbled on hors d'oeuvres, sipped on cocktails, satisfied their sweet tooth’s with cupcakes, took silly pictures in the Shutter Booth, and danced to the tunes of Dee Jay Nune.  Two lucky women won advertising prizes towards future Gazelle STL Magazine issues and swag bags were provided to early attendees.  It was a night to remember and I was blessed to be invited and surrounded by such amazing people.  These ladies and gentlemen of Gazelle STL truly know how to party!  I am so proud of my darling Tameka Green, she is an incredible and mind-blowing woman.  It is a blessing to see far she has come in the fashion scene and like I always say, "Everyone needs a Tameka!".

** Picture of Me and Tameka in the Shutter Booth**

Just when I thought it could not get any better, three women came up to me and said “Hey are you Mimi from page 12?” I bashfully yet proudly said, “Why yes I am J”.  Two of the women asked me if I was going to be writing in future issues of Gazelle and I was like “Hey that is a good idea!”.  You never know what I will be doing next so be sure to stay tuned to the next issue and you may see me contributing in some way.  The other woman was the one that actually had me with an “AWH Moment!”. She expressed her appreciation for the article and was proud to see a Plus Model doing the damn thing and representing the plus size community with class, confidence, and elegance.  She shared her beautiful story with me and I was touched once again to know that what I do and what I say as a Plus Model contributes to someone’s self-esteem. I have become somewhat of an Empowerment and Inspirational figure to many women not only in St. Louis but also in my hometown’s of Las Vegas and Hawaii.  They always tell me how much of an inspiration I am to them and just when they are not feeling themselves because of how they look compared to society’s standards, they can turn to me for guidance and inspiration.  The interesting part is, they think that I am helping them, but yet they are actually motivating me as well!

Fluffy Grl Summit

Hello lovelies, sorry for the delay in posting but here I am J  So I was invited to join this year’s Fluffy Girl Summit held on Mizzou’s campus as a panelist.  It was flattering that someone thought of me enough so say "hey I think Mimi will be a great candidate".  I drove up the morning of and was already a little worried because it was storming pretty badly and of course, it is hard to get people to attend an event when the weather is crappy.  I wanted everything to go right for this group of young women.  I already met two of the young ladies several months ago and was so excited to see and support them.  I finally get there at 2pm and the show starts at 4pm.  The helper and model in me hurries to the back room to see if the girls need my help.  I know that majority of them do not know me but I know how stressful it can be backstage.  They handled everything quite well and only asked for a little help here and there, but they definitely wanted me to have a seat and relax.

Its 3:30 and the door opens, the guests have a seat and patiently wait for the show to start.  Tyler, the host of the evening was hilarious and a great addition to the event that had the entire audience laughing.  The time has come and the first set of ladies grace the runway.  They separated each part of the show into categories (1) business, (2) evening wear, (3) spring, (4) pop-out season (lol), (5) beachwear, and (6) lingerie.  I loved the confidence in the ladies especially those that were chosen for beachwear and lingerie segments of the fashion show.  It takes a lot of courage to get out on the runway and strut them curves but it is a whole other story when you are showing off them curves for the world to see.  They had fun and that’s all that mattered.  They showed the audience that they love the skin that they are in and probably inspired other young women to do the same.  Like I always say, “You only have one life, so why not love all that makes you, YOU!”

** Ladies during Evening Wear Segment**

During each break in between the six different categories, Tyler kept us entertained with his jokes and dance moves, he even brought up a young little fella (like 2 years old) that was absolutely adorable.    Mid-way through the event, Tyler explained the images that were displayed on a screen on the wall opposite of the runway.  It was a slideshow of the ladies included in this event wearing swimsuits, under garments, and some nude with the special parts covered.  It was fantastic and loved that the ladies had the power within themselves to take the photos to share with the participants.  They truly are inspirational and a much needed group of women on Mizzou’s campus.

** Ladies during Lingerie Segment**

At the end of the fabulous runway show, they provided lunch for all the participants, which was super nice and asked everyone to come back into the room and eat and stay for the panel discussion.  There were four panelists and loved that I was a part of this great event.  Kelsey Hammond is a photographer and a business owner, Sylvia Jauregui is the current Residential Coordinator of Center Hall on Mizzou’s campus, Yvonne Chamberlain is the current Director of Leadership, Programming, and Diversity at Stephens College and then there was Me.   We sat on the stage as we were asked questions from Tyler as well as the audience.  It was a great discussion about the plus size community, the locations that we shop, what being a fluffy girl means to us, how we felt about plus size starting at a size 8, and even spoke about dressing for your curves and what is right for your body.  It was nice to be able to share our advice with the crowd and answered some fabulous questions from those in the audience.

**Ladies during Pop-Out Segment**

The ladies over the event took the panelists to dinner a couple of hours after the event was over and it was nice to be able to sit and relax and get to know the ladies a little bit more.  We dined and shared stories and I showed the girls the pictures that I took of them strutting on that runway.  At the end, it was sad knowing that I was not going to see majority of them until next year.  As we were about to leave the table, the ladies presented a gift to the panelists who attended dinner and expressed their appreciation for our participation in the event.  It was a beautiful bracelet that was made by some of the Mizzou students.  It was very touching and so thoughtful.  Overall, the event was great and I am super duper proud of my boo Briona Conway, she represented on that runway and was quite the leader backstage.  It was so nice to see Joniece Cooper again and was great to meet all the ladies of the night!  I am happy and honored that I was able to be a part of such a great and well-needed event.  I cannot wait until next year’s Fluffy Girl Summit!

Weight Shaming

From time to time, I come across pictures that wakes up the tamed beast inside of me.  Pictures that express hatred for women of all walks of life (such as: tall, short, curvy, skinny, photoshopped, not photoshopped, makeup, no makeup, natural, not natural, vegan, non-vegan, etc.)  I have not even touched up race, which could be a whole other story.  The crazy part is the ones expressing the hatred are of the same gender.  Why must we as women degrade others?  There is so much crap going on in the world, so wouldn't it make more sense to lift each other up?
** Photo of the 19th Amendment**

What frustrates me the most is that during 1848 to 1920, women fought tirelessly for the right to vote.  It was passed by Congress on June 4, 1919 and ratified on August 18 (my birthday) 1920 (not the year just the day, lol).  The 19th amendment guaranteed all American women the right to vote.  Achieving this milestone required a lengthy and difficult struggle; victory took decades of agitation and protest.  Several generations of women suffrage supporters lectured, wrote, marched, lobbied, and practiced civil disobedience to achieve what many Americans considered a radical change of the Constitution.  Only a few early supporters actually lived to see the final victory in 1920.  And here we are with all of our weight bashing and various forms of discrimination.  Thousands of questions run rampantly in my mind: How is it that we as women who have come so far in life, now have to be concerned with a label or being placed in a box or category against other women?  When did we stop uniting and start fighting? How can people be so judgmental? Why can't we accept people’s choices in life?

** Picture was created by a weight shamer during Fat Shaming Week, yes you heard me**

In this world of social media, it is easier for those women to bash other women faster than ever before! With such hate virtual mail passed around through various social media platforms, many women find themselves vulnerable to eating disorders.  I have personally seen women on both sides of the spectrum that ended up with detrimental health conditions and some who even died from it.  With so many women struggling with eating disorders, there are even more out there that thrive on the weak.  This weight shaming movement is a serious act of self-hate.  Who died and made these weight shamers and shamers in general, God?  They are taking pain from within and reflecting it on others knowing that they too deal with a body issue that they can't quite handle.  They hate on others because they really hate something about themselves.  Weight is the last acceptable version of discrimination.  For someone to say that I am better than you because I am skinny is like saying I am better than you because I like coffee and you like Tea.  It’s ridiculous for real!

** Picture was created by a weight shamer during Fat Shaming Week, yes you heard me**

The word plus size is forever moving around on the scale and what really does it do other than make people aware of their size.  When in the world has “regular size” only been 0-4, while “plus size” is a size 6 and up according to some humans in the world.  Why is it that a photo of a Plus Model in lingerie can stir up so much controversy as if the world is about to end? I am not perfect, no one is, and I am okay with that. We need to encourage positive body image by celebrating all types of women!

I really could go on and on but then it will be an entire book on Weight Shaming (hhhmmm).  Just wanted to voice my thoughts running on in my head!!!

Thanks for reading! Until Next Time,
Mimi

HCB at FFF week Casting Call

The ladies of Honey’s Child Boutique (HCB), Boss Lady and her Hunny, traveled to Atlanta from Indianapolis, IN to attend this year’s Full Figured Fashion (FFF) Week casting call.  It was an experience especially after the rude awakening that we dealt with in Indianapolis, as we were there to present at Midwest Fashion Week (blog coming soon).  We all piled up in the van and prayed right before hitting the road.  It was about an 8 ½ hour drive and we finally made it to Atlanta.  We had some time to get ourselves together and relax, being that the casting call was not until the next day.  We sat down for a nice dinner as we talked, shared stories and fellowshipped.  This group of beautiful and strong women has been a great blessing to me.  We all have weaknesses and have been through lots of hardship, but we continue to uplift and help each other through rough times.  We get back to the hotel and now it’s time to get ourselves prepared for the morning.  There are many things that must be done.  We get together and make sure everyone knows what will be worn, get pictures/comp cards in order, practice a few times up and down the hotel hallway, and watch prior FFF week videos.

The sun rises, coffee starts brewing, and alarms clocks go off.  We go through our morning routines, fill out necessary paperwork, handle any last minutes stops, and made our way to the casting call right after a much-needed prayer with Boss Lady.  Her words are so touching and inspiring that we all get a little teary eyed.  We get ourselves together and listen to that GPS lady along with upbeat music to get us “on point”.  **Singing, “I woke up like this”**.  Traveling there was a challenge but God was watching over us like always and we all made it there safe and sound.  We arrive and enter the building one by one.  Hearts were pumping hard, palms of our hands started sweating, prayers were being said in our heads and we shake off them jitters.  We strut our curves on the walkway provided, stop with our signature poses, and network with others as we make our mark.  I heard someone ask if Boss Lady is our agent and I can totally see why someone would think that.  We came to Atlanta, about seven deep, representing for all the curvaceous women in St. Louis.  Even though she is not our agent, she sure does so much for each one of us that one may feel as if she was.  We make some great connections and head out of the building to debrief with Boss Lady and Her Hunny about all that happened with each one of us.  Afterwards, we look around and notice how great of a backdrop this could be for a random cell phone photo shoot.
** Photo of the HCB Models during our cellphone shoot**

As we Vogue and Strike a Pose, others watch but that’s okay because we were feeling good and looking good.  I cannot even tell you how long we were out there but it was a long minute, LOL.  It made for a great ride home, as we shared pictures with each other and uploaded them to our social media platforms, for all our loved ones to see.  The reactions we received from our social media framily, placed smiles on our faces as they expressed such kind and inspiring words.  We finally arrive back to HCB headquarters and it’s time to get back to our STL lives!  Stay tuned to see if anyone is selected to rip the runway at FFF Week in New York!

Girls Night Out Gala

On the beautifully strange warm evening of March 15, 2014, I somewhat attended this amazing first annual Girls Night Out (GNO) Gala that was held at the America Center, located downtown St. Louis.  I say “somewhat” because working the event and attending the event are always two different experiences!  GNO is a benefit to support A Hero’s Impact Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that’s purpose is to mentor children and families from all walks of life; with special emphasis on families facing illness.

So let’s start from the beginning, this lovely Saturday was an interesting warm night.  I had on my black dress from Forever 21 and added a petticoat underneath from Johnnie Brocks to get a fluffy whimsical princess look J.  As I walked into the America Center, I instantly heard a Beyonce song and I followed the sound of the tunes all the way up to the second floor.  As I turned the corner, all I saw were vendors galore!! I must say it was the largest selection of vendors that I have seen at any fashion event.  As I walked through the vendor mall with my model-rolling suitcase, I seen vendors carrying all types of items from jewelry, candles, purses, adultish items, makeup, clothing and more.  I eventually came to a line of beautiful women from all walks of life waiting to enter the main showroom.  In the mean time, they were getting their Vogue on while taking photographs on the pink carpet.

I rushed over to the Honey’s Child Boutique (HCB) booth and made sure that all was good and ensured that all HCB models were aware of all necessary information as we would be gracing the runway of all plus size fabulous models and selections from HCB.  At this point I was filled with so much joy and pride that we were able to participate in such a wonderful event.

**Picture of the HCB Owner and Models on the Pink Carpet**

During the evening:
·         They honored 20 special ladies that have overcome tremendous obstacles
·         Played all the women empowered jams
·         The Fish-Eye Booth was available for all to experience and take home some fabulously goofy photos
·         They had various food and drink stations
·         Held various raffle ticket drawings
·         Allowed for lots and lots of dancing
·         A fashion show featuring Honey’s Child Boutique
·         Shopping opportunities everywhere
·         And so much more

Everyone there looked so beautiful in their dress of choice that made them feel as good as they looked!  It is always so much fun to get dressed up and hang with your girlfriends every once in awhile! The models and I mingled around until it was close to show time and we hurried behind the stage to get ready.  We graced the runway to Pharrell’s – Happy Song while wearing garments from Monif C., Josephine Swimwear, Annette Lee, Haus of Sierra Moses, Rue 114, Miguel Torres, and more.

For me, I always enter the Emotional Rollercoaster about 30 minutes till show time.  I start getting super duper nervous, feet start sweating, mouth gets dry, stomach starts turning and all that.  The first heel hits the runway and all the worries wash away by the Super Woman powers that have now taken over!  The adrenaline rush from being on the runway, in front of a large crowd, is truly indescribable.  Especially when there is a part of my mind that knows that women past a size 6 are not always welcomed on the runway! The Final Walk approaches and all the beautiful Plus Models of HCB walk out and grace the runway once again as we bring a spotlight to Letitia Young, the owner of HCB.  We all exit the runway and we are all pleased that it’s all over.  Now we have to deal with the model-clothing tornado that has hit the backstage in the midst of the quick model changes consisting of heels, under garments, dresses, tops, hair, hair accessories and jewelry.  You name it and it was probably back there, lol.

I gathered my items and hurried on out to meet some of my girlfriends that came out support and enjoy the night.  We danced, took goofy pictures, felt beautiful, and truly enjoyed all the women that were there to support such a great cause!  One of my favorite parts of the night was the soul train line that we started on the dance floor.  Seeing women with different disabilities, nationalities, shapes, and sizes, getting their soul train line on was absolutely marvelous.  I am eagerly awaiting next year’s event!

What to have in your Model Bag!

I have been at enough events to figure out what items should be with you in your model bag.  As a model, there will be a lot of downtime especially during fashion shows.  If I were you, I would use or purchase a small bag with wheels.  Take a look at my list and get that bag together J

Ladies Model Bag
  1. Water – You have to stay hydrated.
  2.  Portfolio or print out of headshots and full body pictures.
  3. Business cards or comp cards – Network while you are there.
  4. Foundation – The makeup artist may not have the right foundation for your complexion; therefore, I suggest you bring your own.
  5. Makeup – Bring your everyday makeup items with you as well (eyeliner, mascara, lipstick, primer, etc).  Sometimes, a makeup artist will not be provided or something may happen where your makeup is not done and its approaching show time.  To eliminate all these worries, bring them just in case.
  6. Spanx/Shape wear.
  7. Nude and Black underwear/thong as well as nude and black strapless bra.
  8. Nude and Black Heels.
  9. Bite Size Snack – You never know how long you will be waiting.  Sometimes, they will provide snacks for the models but this is not always the case.  Be sure to bring something that you can just pop in your mouth; you do not want to mess up your lipstick or outfit.
  10. Cell phone and charger – This is a must especially for all those uploads to social media that you will be doing from behind the scenes.
  11. Magazine or something to entertain you.
  12.  Hair stuff – Brush, Comb, Bobby Pins, Hair spray etc.  You never know if the hair stylist will cancel or if no one was hired for that in the first place.
  13. Clear Deodorant – You never know.
  14. Breath mints or mouthwash (NO GUM) – Bad breath is rude, lol.
  15. Curling Iron and/or Flat Iron – You just never know if you will need to touch up your hair or completely style your hair.
  16. Accessories – Bring a few accessories such as statement necklaces, earrings, rings, etc., just in case.
  17. Body tanners or bronzers – If you feel the need.
  18. Mirror – So you can look flawless!

Fellas Model Bag
  1. Water – You have to stay hydrated.
  2. Portfolio or print out of headshots and full body pictures.
  3. Business cards or comp cards – Network while you are there
  4. Lip Balm – Cracked lips are just not cute.
  5. Underwear – Boxer Briefs or Low-Rise, NO BOXERS (unless they ask for it).  You need something firm fitting to your skin.
  6. Bite Size Snack – You never know how long you will be waiting.  Sometimes, they will provide snacks for the models but this is not always the case.
  7. Cell phone and charger – This is a must especially for all those uploads to social media that you will be doing from behind the scenes.
  8. Hair stuff – Brush, Comb, Hair balm, Hair spray etc.  You never know if the hair stylist will cancel or if no one was hired for that in the first place.
  9. Magazine or something to entertain you.
  10. Clear Deodorant – You never know.
  11. Breath mints or mouthwash (NO GUM) – Bad breath is rude, lol.
  12. Eye Drops – Keeps eyes from being red.

If you are attending a casting call or audition, I suggest having your portfolio, business cards and/or comp cards in hand.  In addition, ladies have your heels on before entering the room.

*TIP: If you get sweaty feet like I do when I am nervous, spray your feet with a heavy-duty hairspray.  It will help your feet from sliding out of your heels.

Graze.com

I am amazed by the graze.com’s marketing campaign that I had to write a post about it.  It all started when I was on Instagram and seen a post from a friend about these graze.com people and she displayed a code for a free box to try.  I was curious so I went to their website www.graze.com and signed up in order to get my free box.  As I continue to read and sign-up, I stopped for a sec because it required my credit card information.  I decided to continue you with it and told myself that I would just cancel if I was not pleased with it or just because I did not want to pay $6.00 per box.

The sign-up process was super simple and I got more in-depth when I started clicking away at the selections.  They have over 90 portion control snacks so I went through them all and you can select options such as Trash, Try, Like, and Love.  Based on your selection, they will either include those items in your box or not.  It was pretty interesting to see the combinations that they had.  They inform you that your fifth box is also free and provide you with a friend code to share on social media or by word of mouth.  When a friend of yours uses the code, you receive $1.00 towards your next box or you can donate $1 to their charity (Graze School of Farming).  I am like how cool is that? PPSSTTT My code is MAINIT8GB in case you are curious like me J

In two weeks I received my first box and it was super cute (see the pictures below).  Included with the box were four individual pouches of goodness and a card with special invites to hand out to your friends with that friend code on it.  I was thinking to myself, wow, who thought of this marketing idea because I think its super cool.  I wondered to myself how many people actually sign-up and pay for things like this when you can just go to the grocery instead.  Well my thoughts were answered when I seen this Telegraph article titled “Snack maker Graze.com smashes US targets” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/businessclub/10686474/Snack-maker-Graze.com-smashes-US-targets.html.  It basically stated that Graze.com launched into the American market in December last year.  Within a week, the company had signed up 30,000 subscribers across 48 states.  Three months on, the company has smashed its first quarter targets, with 100,000 customers signed up.

Talk about a great marketing plan oh and the goodies are DELISH!!!!

2nd Modeling Tip: Research and Network

You much research!!! I am not sure how many times I can express this, but seriously you must do your research. Research designers, boutiques, agencies, model management companies, fashion shows, models, photographers, etc. If you are wondering why, I would actually ask you “Why not?” Research will provide you with the core information about the fashion industry and can potentially lead to a job here and there. For an example, there are lots of designers, stores, and boutiques that use mannequins as their way of modeling their inventory. Reach out to some of them and introduce yourself. You never know where it may lead you, if you do not take the initiative and reach out to them. You know they always say “Closed mouths don’t get fed”. As for photographers, there are so many types of photographers and each one has a specific style of photography. Before, working with anyone, I highly suggest researching them and then ask yourself, “Does this represent who I am?” If you can’t answer this question with a yes, I would think twice if I was you.

Go out there in cyber space and search for models in your local area as well as well-known models. Models already in the industry will be your best resource. Pay attention to what these models are doing, who they are networking with, how they are posing, and start gathering concepts for your next photo shoot. You always want to keep your portfolio current and continue to add different types of photos. Agencies and others looking to book you will be looking for diversity in your portfolio.

For my curvy ladies, pay close attention to other plus models out there and study how they are posing. There are always different ways to twist and turn in certain garments to achieve that fabulous look. Some of my favorite plus models out there are: Ashley Graham, Tara Lynn, Denise Bidot, Christina Mendez, Jeannie Ferguson, Mia Amber Davis (RIP beautiful), and Allison McGevna. Request them all and others to be your friend on Facebook, follow them on Instagram and Twitter. Google them as well and read about their stories on how they made it in the modeling industry.

In addition, I highly suggest getting involved with fashion networks in your surrounding area. Social media will be your best friend for all of this!! If you are on Facebook, join fashion related groups such as STL Fashion Connect. These types of groups will provide fashion related events, casting calls, others looking to collaborate on a project, and so much more. Look at the local magazines and newspapers and attend events. Take advantage of any networking opportunities that may arise. You never know where a simple “Hello my name is….” will take you. Be sure to work that room! It may be a bit overwhelming at first, but it will come natural one day! Stay tuned to what is hot and trending not only in your local area but in major fashion locations such as New York, Paris, and Los Angeles, just to name a few.

Lastly, do not let anyone tell you that you can’t do something because of your height, weight, disability, etc. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you!

Women Who Inspire – UMSL Alumni Association Event

The University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL) Alumni Association held a fabulous night of fashion, champagne, and mingling at Saks Fifth Avenue – Frontenac, which benefited the UMSL Women’s Leadership Initiative.  This initiative raises awareness and grows the university’s women-focused programs that educate women to become effective leaders in the workplace and the community.

The participants conversed with others over champagne and light bites until the models graced us with their presence wearing pieces from the Donna Karan New York Spring 2014 Collection.  I personally loved several of her pieces such as the Belted Wrap Jacket with the Crushed-Hem Pencil Skirt, the Print Linen & Silk Skirt, and the Stretch Denim with Jersey Dress.  I actually pictured myself wearing them off in Paris somewhere, gallivanting around town while I patiently wait for a whimsical moment (something fashion related or a handsome man will do).  Even on that cold winter night, it was a pleasure to see a preview of the designer’s collection.  Donna Karan is one of those designers that will forever create timeless, classy, and well constructed garments.

It was nice to see lots of familiar faces and to catch up with former classmates.  I am excited to see the UMSL Alumni Association hosting a variety of events such as this one and others that have caught my eye. Overall it was a wonderful event and I look forward to more from those at UMSL Alumni Association.

Graphic Fashion Show

On February 15, 2014, I attended the Graphic Fashion Show, produced by Brainchild Events and IndyGround Entertainment, held at 2720 Cherokee!  It’s amazing how much I am on Cherokee street, I feel like I need a second home here, lol!  Anyways, back to my topic, I always love a Good Graphic T-shirt Show! It brings a different kind of runway feel that is playful and fabulous without the normal serious model looks and poses!  Even though it was an icy one out there in the streets of St. Louis, I slipped on my comfy Eskimo shoes, that ensures that Mimi does not fall (even though they are not cute, lol), and went about my Mimi way!

The venue was perfect for this event and I was very pleased with the outcome of the entire night!  Oh and of course it’s better when you are sitting in the front row next to some of the cool kids like Kevin Johnson.  The girls had fun on the runway while rocking their graphic T-Shirts and looking amazing all at the same dang time!  The music selection played while the models did their thang on the runway was great ear candy for music lovers such as myself!  I loved when one model came out with a basketball and another with a baseball bat!  Too cute!!  The vendors and live artists there was truly a site to see!  I am always constantly reminded how much talent we have here in the St. Louis community!

Being a model myself, I always enjoy coming out to support my fellow model friends!  Let me just say that if you were not in attendance, Lo Victoria and Jazz Jones WERKED the Runway!!!

The featured designers were:

  • Vacay from the STL/KC area
  • CLR MNSTR from the STL area
  • GUM Clothing from KC
  • IMNEX from STL
  • and Indegious Designs from STL

Live Music was provided by DJ Mahf and Mathias and the Pirates!

Several Vendors and Live Artists were in the house including:

  • SahGol
  • Park Lane
  • Style House
  • Ian Quattrocchi
  • Aerin Soroka
  • and others :)

I purchased a pair of FAB earrings from SahGol, was introduced the the amazing Aerin Soroka, and told myself I need to stop by CLR MNSTR and Style House!!

Can’t wait till Next Time!!

My First Tip for Aspiring Models

**Picture by Travis Crosby during my VERY FIRST Photo Shoot!!**

Okay so I have gotten so many questions from aspiring models asking me questions like "How did I get started?"and "Can you help me because I don't know where to begin and my parents won't help?", that I decided to write several short blogs regarding modeling tips that I found helpful when I got started!

Tip #1: Portfolio
The first thing that you need to do is get your portfolio together.  I recommend starting with photographers that are willing or seeking models for TF or TFP shoots (some call them Test Shoots).  TF stands for "Time For" or "Trade For" and TFP means "Time For Print".  Basically, you are exchanging your time for their time and you both benefit by the finished product, "the photo".  Therefore, you do not pay them and they do not pay you as well.  Sometimes they may say that you will receive a certain amount of digital pictures and if you want more you can purchase more.  This is fine as long as it is discussed before hand.  There are several photographers out there that are willing to do TF shoots with models for various reasons such as: (1) to test out new products that they have purchased such as lens or lights, (2) to complete a project that they may have in mind, (3) to stay fresh on their toes during down times, (4) they may be starting out as well and may need practice behind the camera in different environments, or (5) to simply add a look to their portfolio that they are missing.

To get started, I started with www.modelmayhem.com.  This is a pretty good website that will help you find lots of people in the fashion industry such as makeup artists, hair stylists, digital artists, photographers, etc., and you can also search through casting calls in your area.  I searched through lots of pages and looked at photos for ideas and inspiration.  I must caution anyone that starts a profile with Model Mayhem!!! Lots of SPAMMERS will try to "Get You" in the beginning.  They seem to target the new profiles probably because they are thinking that the people with new profiles are new to the industry and are easy to persuade and naive!  You may get several emails from people telling you about a great opportunity; however, it will sound way too good to be true.  As an example, the email may say something like "We will pay you X amount of money and fly you to Germany with all expenses paid to shoot with X Brand".  Please use your common sense and think that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Just be careful about those, they are probably trying to get some type of information from you.

Caution Number 2, I suggest doing your homework on the photographers that you decide to meet up with.  For example, take a look at their portfolio to see what type of pictures they normally take.  If you see pictures on their website that does not represent anything that you are about, think hard about working with them.  If this is a type of category that they are trying to add to their portfolio that is a different story, but if they are not then think twice.  Reason being, why would you want to work with someone who does something that does not represent who you are?  YOU must remember that you are a BRAND and you must always represent your brand appropriately!  Also, I always suggest meeting up with the photographer in a public place where you feel comfortable and bring a friend if possible.  If you agree to meet at their studio, just be aware of your surroundings and always bring a friend or tell someone where you are going.  If a photographer requires you to sign a model release form, be sure to read it before signing and obtain a copy.

Stay tuned for more helpful tips!!

P.S.  Most of all have fun in your shoots! When you are stressed or nervous, it will totally tell in your photos! Just try to relax, be playful, play some music, and rock out!!!
